On 18 May 1944, the Crimean Tatars were deported by the decision of the USSR State Defence Committee from the Crimea to Uzbekistan and neighboring regions of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and some regions of the RSFSR. A total of 238 500 Crimean Tatars were evicted, without regard to demobilized military. Deportation killed 46% of the Crimean Tatar population, of whom half were children under the age of 18. In Ukraine, the deportation of the Crimean people was recognized as genocide.
