September 12: The Regional Initiative of Solidarity with the Crimean Tatar People: Establishing the Ichnia District Ukrainian – Crimean Tatar Friendship Society Birlik in the Chernihiv Region

On September 12, at 1:00 p.m., a press conference titled “The Regional Initiative of Solidarity with the Crimean Tatar People: Establishing the Ichnia District Ukrainian – Crimean Tatar Friendship Society Birlik in the Chernihiv Region” is held at the Ukrinform news agency (Hall 1).

Organized by: Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine.

Participants: Refat Chubarov, Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, people’s deputy of Ukraine; Yulia Kazdobina, Adviser to the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine; Mykola Cherep, Head of the Ichnia District Ukrainian – Crimean Tatar Friendship Society Birlik, head of NGO “Entrepreneur of the Ichnia Raion”, member of the Community of Local Historians of Ukraine; Andrii Ivanets, coordinator of the Tavrian Humanitarian Platform, PhD in History.

Additional Information. On 26 July 2017, the Day of Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar Friendship and Solidarity was celebrated for the first time in Ichnia Raion. The participants included members of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, representatives of the local and municipal authorities of Ichnia Raion, the Tavrian Humanitarian Platform, and public activists from Kyiv and Chernihiv Oblast.

That day, the Crimeans met with local and municipal officials, scientists, writers and other public members of Ichnia Raion.

In the village Krupychpole, a memorial was mounted commemorating Ukrainian – Crimean Tatar military fraternity at the site where the armies of hetman Ivan Vyhovsky and Crimean khan Mehmed IV Giray met before the Battle of Konotop in 1659.

Pending the preparation and holding of the event, an idea came up in Ichnia Raion to establish the Ukrainian – Crimean Tatar Friendship Society, which was registered later in early September.

During the press conference, the purposes and tasks of the Society, and the history behind its creation, are to be highlighted, and the first souvenir medal of the Birlik Society is to be presented.

Also, some of the issues of Ukraine’s policy of commemorating the past of Crimea and of the Crimean Tatar people is to be discussed.
