1624 objects of cultural infrastructure have already been damaged in Ukraine because of russian aggression

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine continues to document the damages to cultural infrastructure objects in Ukraine because of russian aggression. As of August 29, 2023, 1624 objects of cultural infrastructure have been damaged, not including cultural heritage sites. Among them, nearly a third (591 objects) have been destroyed.

Over the past month, the overall number of damaged objects of cultural infrastructure has increased by 19 objects, with the majority of them being in the Odesa region (5 objects or 26%).

The most significant losses and damages to cultural infrastructure have been experienced  in Donetsk, Kherson, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk regions.

The largest group of cultural infrastructure objects that were damaged or destroyed are creative hubs  – 47% of the total number of institutions of cultural infrastructure which experienced damage.

Among them identified at least:

·         creative hubs – 769

·         libraries – 610

·         museums and galleries – 93

·         theaters and philharmonic halls – 30

·         institutions of art education – 122.

Creative hubs, libraries, museums, theaters, philharmonic halls, art education institutions (art schools and colleges) and objects of cultural heritage have experienced damages and destruction in the territory of 230 amalgamated communities (ACs) (15.7% of the total number of ACs), in particular: in Donetsk (87%), Sumy (51%), Luhansk (42%), Mykolaiv (42%), Kherson (37%), Kharkiv (36%), Zaporizhzhia (33%), Kyiv (29%), Dnipropetrovsk (18%), Chernihiv (16%), Zhytomyr (12%),  Khmelnytskyi (8%), Odesa (6%),  Lviv (4%),  Vinnytsia (3%), Cherkasy (3%), Zakarpattia (2%) regions and the city of Kyiv.

It should be noted that currently almost the entire territory of Luhansk and significant parts of the territories of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions are still under temporary occupation. Because of this, it is impossible to calculate the exact number of objects of cultural infrastructure damaged during the hostilities and occupation.
