Ukraine has been elected to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

Today, June 11, Ukraine was elected for the first time to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for a four-year term from the date of election during the 10th session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

“Election to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is a historic event for Ukraine, an important step in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. We express our sincere gratitude to the States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for supporting Ukraine in this important matter. Ukraine, in its activities, will strictly adhere to the spirit and letter of the Convention, sharing its values. We aim to enhance respect for living heritage, give maximum attention to the safeguarding of Ukraine’s intangible cultural heritage, which is an integral part of national security, the building of sustainable peace, and cultural harmony, and thus a fundamental priority for Ukraine. We once again express our gratitude for the support of Ukraine and our culture during challenging times and the trust placed in us, which we consider a great responsibility,” said Anastasia Bondar, Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine for Digital Development, Digital Transformations, and Digitalization, during the committee meeting.

Let us recall that Ukraine submitted its candidacy at the end of 2023 for a four-year term.

Ratified by Ukraine in 2008, the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage promotes the effective safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage at local, national, and international levels, ensures respect for it, raises awareness of its importance, and ensures its recognition.

Ukraine’s election to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage not only contributes to the positive image of the state but also provides an opportunity to effectively achieve and fulfill the goals of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, as well as the obligations undertaken by Ukraine in implementing the Convention.
