Today, July 28, 2022, Ukraine is celebrating the Day of Ukrainian Statehood for the first time. Last year, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered to introduce a new state holiday, which would be celebrated on the day of the baptism of Kyivan Rus-Ukraine on July 28, during the celebrations on the occasion of the Independence Day of Ukraine and approved the corresponding decree.
Thus, in accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 423 dated August 24, 2021, with the aim of approving more than a thousand-year-old traditions of Ukrainian state-building, which goes back to the foundation of the city of Kyiv and flourished during the reign of Volodymyr the Great, we honor the outstanding state-builder of Kyiv, Prince Volodymyr the Great, on the Day of Christianisation of Kyivan Rus– Ukraine.
Celebrating it, we also show our respect to Taras Shevchenko, Mykola Kostomarov, Volodymyr Antonovych, Mykhailo Drahomanov, Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka, Mykhailo Hrushevsky, other notable representatives of the national elite and fighters for the statehood and independence of Ukraine.
The Day of Ukrainian Statehood was introduced to confirm the continuity of more than a thousand-year history of Ukrainian statehood, as well as to counter russian disinformation and historical fakes about the so-called unity of the origin of the Ukrainian and russian people.
The concept of state events for the Day of Ukrainian Statehood is based on the idea of durability and continuity of the thousand-year-old state-building traditions of Ukraine from Rus to the present day.
Also, today Ukraine is celebrating the 1034th anniversary of the Christianisation of Kyivan Rus.
We remind you that to the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine in cooperation with the Ukrainian agency of communication provid presented the concept of a single visual symbol of the holiday.
